NIGERIA: The Tyranny of National Narcissism by Dr. Jekwu Ozoemene

Nigeria has a damaged generation that does not know they are damaged.

Serially abused, they are usually the first to point at their upbringing and proselytize on "how well we turned out" compared to the irresponsible children of today.

Yet same people have produced leaders who are unable to galvanize the led by exemplary conduct, who cannot effectively communicate a vision and an actionalbe mission statement.

Their understanding of leadership is toxic; barking, shouting, bullying and rambunctious impotent activism, and where and when they can get away with it, public physical and verbal flogging.

They are usually the ones in constant search for the next ‘strongman’ President and at the first opportunity, will suggest that this strongman president suspends the constitution to get things done faster and better because ‘Nigerians are very stubborn’.

The same generation has produced 'big-big' men and women with 'big-big' cars and titles who suffer arrhythmia, incontinence, hyperventilation, erectile dysfunction, a combination of some of the ailments or all of the above, once they see the 'big oga’s' call on their phone or head into a meeting with the 'big oga'.

And they love this oga die oh! like a battered wife in an abusive marriage. 

“Its just that I can be stubborn sometimes” they enthuse amidst bruises.

“My mouth is always running, so he beats me because he loves me” they say while adorned with bruises, some still suppurating and bleeding, others scabbed over, trapping decades of horrendous pain.

This is a generation that has acquired education without knowledge and enlightenment and has outsourced thinking to marabouts, ladical Imams, Indaboskious showmen and pastorpreneurs. 

A "Babu Corona" people who disparage the rigours of research, and expect standards to be lowered for their claims to be forcefully shoved down the throats of others. As if the laws of science can be suspended as some form of affirmative action for their ignorance and stupidity.

 

A generation that had family picnics at bar beach public executions, were flogged for speaking truth to power, apologized when their elders or husbands farted in their face, who watched their parents frog-jumped, or flogged into essential commodities lines with koboko, whose heads were not used for thinking but to carry load; firewood, buckets of water and for receiving konk-knocks. 

A genocidal generation who rose at night to murder their neigbours, and repeated this over and over again, cannot possibly have escaped without Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). It is worse when a person of this generation is articulate, writes well or has both skills and has access to data and the internet.

Don’t be impressed if you see them “dragging” those in authority. As they are dragging publicly, they are sending account numbers, asking for “giveaways” contracts or favours privately.

Such individuals are dangerous to themselves and society.

This generation is mine, those that came before us and some that came after us.

See how well we all turned out.
