Why is the Nigerian Navy Embracing Artificial Intelligence?

The Chief of Naval Staff (CNS), Vice Adm. Emmanuel Ogalla, has announced that the Nigerian Navy will be incorporating Artificial Intelligence (AI) and other emerging technologies to enhance its operational activities. In a paper presented by navy participants of National Defence College (NDC) Course 31, titled "Artificial Intelligence and Ship Maintenance: Strategic Options for the Nigerian Navy by 2035," it was highlighted that the use of AI is revolutionizing the maritime industry. The Nigerian Navy aims to leverage this technology to improve ship availability and enhance operational effectiveness.

As technology advances, ships are becoming increasingly sophisticated. The integration of AI and other emerging technologies in their construction has become essential. To maintain a competitive edge during operations, the Nigerian navy must continue to adopt and integrate these technologies. Vice Adm. Ogalla emphasized the importance of embracing AI and other emerging technologies for the navy to remain efficient and effective.

The presentation of the paper by NDC Course 31 participants was seen as timely and significant. It serves as a wake-up call for the navy to embrace AI and other emerging technologies and consider their implications for operational effectiveness. Vice Adm. Ogalla praised the participants for developing a roadmap to transform the Navy's maintenance system into an AI-compliant system. He also applauded their suggestion of using In-Transit-Hull cleaning, which would save the navy a considerable amount of foreign exchange by eliminating the need to dock ships for hull cleaning.

Rear Adm. Olumuyiwa Olotu, Commandant of NDC, highlighted the importance of AI as an emerging technology that can enhance the capabilities and efficiency of the navy in various aspects, including ships systems, weapons, networks, and command and control. The strategies proposed by the participants are expected to enhance the navy's capabilities and operations, aligning with Nigeria's security objectives.
